Laptop

I am thinking of acquiring a laptop for myself in the near future. What I am looking for is something to do things like Uni work ie Excel, Word etc. as opposed to gaming. I am thinking about dvd capabilities as well. Can anyone offer me advice on this topic, ie speed, RAM, screen size/type etc. as I have no experience or comprehension of these weird and wonderful things.

First Q is what how much are you willing to spend?

Laptops range from about $1500 upwards.

Jared you can use MSN you know makes it easier to discuss such things.

Eg a cheap one that would do what you want.

Acer Travelmate TM2003 LC C2.8GHz 256MB 40GB DVD/CDRW XPH
* TravelMate 2003LC Intel Celeron Processor 2.8GHz
* 15" Active colour screen with XGA Resolution
* 256 MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM DVD/ CDRw Combo
* Microsoft Windows XP Home Notebook
Your Buy Price: $1,855.13

A noticeably better one that wuld have longer battery life and wireless networking (which is nice).

Acer Travelmate 291LCI 1.4 256 40 DVD/CDRW 15 XP Pro
* Intel Centrino mobile technology Pentium M 1.5 GHz
* 256MB 40GB DVD/CDrw 56Kbps 15" TFT LCD FireWire
* S-Video Fast Infra-red port 802.11b/G
* XP Professional Notebook Deal
Your Buy Price: $2,361.38 (inc GST)

A fairly high end machine that could alos play games would be more in the area of.

A2500d: AthlonXP 3000+, 15" Screen, 512MB Ram, 60G, ATI Radeon 9600 (64MB RAM) $2399 +GST.

Note for an average work system pretty much any new laptop CPU will do though Pentium M systems have the best battery life.
512MB of RAM would be recomended for running Windows XP but you could get by on 256MB.

You really don't want any thing less than 40GB of Harddrive other wise you'll run out of storage space real quick.

14" or 15" screens will do for most work. But 15" or 15.4" is to be prefered if possible. And you want a min Reslution of 1024x768.

Graphics card well if you don't want to play any games it's not a factor. If you wouldn't mind playing the odd one you want to look for an ATI or NVIDIA one.

Weight is also a factor you need to consider. With the lightest Laptops costing the most!
Range is usually from 1Kg to 5KG's. With most cheap laptops around the 3KG mark. 1KG being very expensive and 5KG's also being very expensive as they're generally the fastest laptops you can get.

An Apple laptop might also be a consideration if you want soemthing thats light and looks good but you'll pay quite abit for it!

EG
iBook 12": 1GHz G4
NZ $1,845.00 +GST
1GHz PowerPC G4
12-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
30GB Ultra ATA drive
DVD/CD-ROM/CD-RW/CD-R
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory

Is fairly fast, light (~2.2kg) and looks VERY nice but is abit light on the RAM and Hard Drive space and has a quite small screen. Also It doesn't run windows so your'd have to get used to MacOSX or install linux. However ram and HD can be upgraded though that does make the thing abit more expensive.

I'd suggest that your best bet would be to decided exactly what you want to do with it. Then Chat to me and or Brehaut about it as we can make suggestions to the sort of machine you'll need to do what you want. As well as probably point you to a few places with decent priced models.

NOTE: Don't buy a DELL laptop!
